Snoring and the Risk of Glaucoma

Snoring is a common problem, with statistics showing that about half of adults snore occasionally. However, sometimes snoring can be a warning sign that should not be overlooked, as it could indicate sleep apnea. People who experience sleep apnea are at higher risk of developing several health issues, including:

  1. Obesity
  2. Memory loss
  3. Premature aging
  4. High blood pressure
  5. Heart disease
  6. Stroke
  7. Diabetes
  8. Increased risk of accidents

Additionally, individuals with sleep apnea are at a tenfold increased risk of developing glaucoma. This is thought to be due to the lack of oxygen during episodes of breath cessation, which gradually causes the optic nerve tissue to die. In these cases, eye pressure may not rise like it does in most glaucoma patients. Although many people with sleep apnea snore loudly, not everyone who snores has sleep apnea. Therefore, if someone snores loudly and experiences other symptoms such as:

  1. Choking
  2. Shallow or labored breathing while asleep
  3. Brief or prolonged periods of breath cessation
  4. Restless or excessive movement during sleep
  5. Waking up with headaches
  6. Daytime drowsiness

They should seek medical attention for evaluation and treatment. And don’t forget to get a check-up for glaucoma as well.
